What to expect: Socks, adventures, finding where you fit in
In The Adventure of Smelly Sock, author Russell Delk introduces readers to a sock that has gotten lost on its way to the washing machine. Sock realizes that if he doesn’t find Grayson, the owner of the foot that wears him, he might never go on another adventure again. The thought is so frightening to Sock that he embarks on a mission to find his owner.
Sock begins his crusade in the kitchen—he meets the refrigerator and asks for Grayson. The huge white appliance doesn’t know where Grayson might be but he does notice that Sock smells quite a bit. And not in a pleasant way. The refrigerator sends Sock to the living room to speak to the lamp. The lamp doesn’t know where Grayson is but she also calls Sock’s attention to the fact that he doesn’t smell nice. Sock realizes that he’ll need to find Grayson soon because that seems to be the only place he fits in. The lamp sends him on to see Mr. Toilet and finally Sock finds someone that doesn’t think he smells bad. Although Mr. Toilet can’t help find Grayson he sends Sock along to the next destination and Sock realizes that there are adventures to be found around every corner.
Full of fun and colorful illustrations, The Adventure of Smelly Sock is sure to delight young readers with a sense of humor. Sock gets called names because he smells but the ending provides a hopeful resolution that will serve as a good lesson on empathy and compassion. Sock embraces a new name, makes new friends and is set to embark on a new adventure. This well-paced story also makes for a fun read-aloud book that will charm readers young and old.
