What to Expect: Hunger, nutrition, sustainability, biodiversity, and genetic science.

Climate change, hunger, and habitat loss are familiar buzzwords in the modern world, but thanks to the media’s frequent emphasis on bad news, less is commonly known about the potential solutions being developed by science. The Sorgho Squad helps spotlight one of these solutions by introducing young readers to the science and history of ancient grains as a sustainable agricultural crop.

All over the world, people are suffering from malnutrition and hunger, animals are losing their habitat, and climate change is causing devastation. What can be done? At London’s Academy of Applied Archeology, Professor Sorgho is hard at work trying to answer that question when he comes across a promising lead—an ancient team of super-grain superheroes! Once upon a time, these superheroes helped keep human agriculture and economies sustainable, but they’ve been scattered across the globe and lost for thousands of years. Can Professor Sorgho and his assistant Alice find them in time to save the modern world? The first stop is Pakistan to revive Jowar, the hero who brought Sorghum to humanity.

Presenting science in an exciting Indiana Jones-style adventure, the text uses familiar motifs like superheroes, lost cities, and magic words to educate readers about the global importance of ancient grains. The fast-paced plot, snappy dialogue, and comic-book-style artwork support the quest theme, while a fact page at the end of the book helps readers connect what they have read to real life.

From the Ruins Comes Jowar is an exciting and original start to what looks like a promising new sustainability series.
