About the Author
Cornelia Maude Spelman is a writer, artist, and former social worker who writes about the importance of emotions and healthy relationships in the lives of children and families. Her “The Way I Feel” series of picture books for young children is about recognizing and managing emotions and forming healthy, happy relationships. Her books also help children cope with difficult situations such as divorce, and help parents educate their children about sexual abuse. Her books have been called “sensitive,” “compassionate,” “gentle,” “reassuring,” and “understanding.” Her memoir, Missing, about her mother’s life and death and the emotional legacies in a family has been called “memoir writing at its absolute finest” (Alex Kotlowitz).

About the Illustrator
A native of California, Kathy Parkinson received an undergraduate degree in Art and Design from UC Davis and an MA in Art from UCLA. Her love of color and pattern, so much a part of the environment she grew up in, has been a integral part of her work ever since. In 1980 she moved to the Boston area. While raising three children, Kathy worked part time illustrating books for young people and developing her decorative painting skills. For several years, she taught Decorative Painting classes at The Kendall Center for the Arts in Belmont, MA. Now Kathy enjoys working out of her studio using the interplay of color, pattern, and imagery to create floor cloths, murals, faux finishes, and painted furniture for individual clients. Her feeling is that life is short… why not live it surrounded by color!
