CHRISTOPHER PAOLINI is the author of the internationally bestselling Inheritance Cycle. He draws inspiration for the world of Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, from the natural beauty that surrounds his home in Montana: the tumultuous weather, the roaring Yellowstone River, and the soaring Beartooth Mountains. Find out more about Christopher and the Inheritance cycle at Alagaesia.com.

Latest published book …

Book IV of the Inheritance Cycle

You wrote it because …

I had to finish the series, both for myself and for the readers. The story of Eragon and Saphira had been sitting in my brain for over a decade, burning a hole in my mind; putting it on paper was the only way to free myself of it and also share it with the rest of the world.

Favorite place to write …

At home, in my office, on my sofa. For some reason I’m twice as creative on my sofa than I am at my desk, which is only a few feet a way.

Necessary writing/creativity tool …

Peace and quiet. Random sounds and motions are incredibly distracting for me.

Favorite bookshop …

Hmm. Hard to pick a favorite. . . . I’d say a store with lots of closely-set bookcases crammed with obscure and out of print volumes that would otherwise be impossible to find.

Currently reading …

A collection of H. P. Lovecraft’s fiction, A Boy and His Tank by Leo Frankowski, and a selection of Tennyson’s poems published by the Everyman Library.

All-time favorite children’s book you didn’t write…

All the ones I loved growing up: The Hobbit, A Wrinkle in Time, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Tom Swift books, Anne of Green Gables, and so on.

An author you idol …

Ursula K. Le Guin, Evangeline Walton, and Mervyn Peake

Favorite illustrator …

Michael Whelan, Rembrant, Ciruelo, Palencar, and too many others to list.

A literary character to vacation with …

Saphira the dragon from my books, because she can fly, catch food, and eat anyone I don’t like.

More Christopher Paolini …
