What to expect: Polar Bears, Penguins, and Friendship
Paulette Bogan perfectly describes every child’s egocentric outlook on how a new friend is “only theirs” in Virgil & Owen. Virgil is so happy to find a polar bear named, Owen. He is so excited to have Owen as his new best friend and to have him all to himself. However, when Owen becomes popular on the iceberg, Virgil becomes jealous and doesn’t want to share. This story perfectly describes the classic early childhood outlook on friendship. It offers a great way of demonstrating to little ones that it is okay when your friend plays with others and that it doesn’t mean that you are going to lose them as a friend. This book provides the perfect opportunity to talk about how friendship works and the importance of sharing. The illustrations are both uncomplicated and whimsical and fit perfectly with the book’s message!
Virgil & Owen, by Paulette Bogan, is a great choice for children ages 0 to 5.
