What to expect: Culture, Travel, Italy, Food

Do you have your passaporto (passport) handy? It’s time to merriggiare (rest at noon in a shady spot) with a copy of If You Were Me and Lived In .. Italy and introduce your kids to the wealth of culture that abounds in the Republic of Italy—the famous country shaped like a boot.

Beginning with location and a touch of Roman Empire history, Carole P. Roman whisks readers away on a sightseeing tour led by a young Italian boy and girl. From geography to history to gastronomy, all of the basics are covered, but no trip to Italy would be complete without a stop for gelato (ice cream) with Mama and Papa. The book includes various anecdotes and illustrations about Italian food and events, such as La Festa delle Donne (International Women’s Day)—and thanks to the illustration of a young Italian boy giving fresh-picked yellow flowers to his mama, it not only empowers girls, but boys, too.

As in all of the books in this educational series, there is a pronunciation guide at the end that is a wonderful resource for trying out some of the Italian words introduced throughout the pages. Kelsea Wierenga’s multi-media illustrations complete the book by rounding out the text with colorful images that capture the essence of this beautiful country and the fashionable people that reside there.

More than just Informazioni turistiche (tourist information), this book is a must for anyone wanting to introduce kids, either in a classroom or at home, to Italy or culture in general. Molto buono (very good), Carole P. Roman!
