What to expect: Toy Animals, Teamwork, Belonging

The Fly with One Eye is a picture book that shows how one fly finds a sense of belonging by discovering a place in his community.

A bunch of misfit toys are sitting on the sales rack, but they are being passed over for bright gadgets and toys that make noise. There is a monkey without a tail, a puppy with three legs, a t-rex with no teeth, a fly with one eye, and more. The fly with one eye is the loneliest of all. On the day that the puppy with three legs falls from the very high shelf, the fly, who has never flown to the floor before, does not think twice about flying into action to rescue a fellow misfit toy. It will take teamwork, though. Through this teamwork, the fly finds a sense of belonging and the puppy may just be rescued and returned to the top shelf.

    “So just like the fly

    and those different than you,

    in our imperfect way,

    we’re all perfect, too.”

The author’s text clearly highlights that our differences and imperfections should not impede our self-worth. This works hand-in-hand with the colorful illustrations that simply convey the power that teamwork and community can have on an individual’s sense of belonging. A fun double-page spread, that requires turning the book vertically, shows all of the animals making a chain from the top shelf all the way to the puppy on the floor.

For fans of Don Freeman’s beloved Corduroy.

    Halterman Family

Like many parents of little ones we started making up bedtime stories when our first bundle of joy arrived. From there our love for story telling grew until we decided to bring our first story to life.

We are not Big Book and each have full time jobs in other areas. Needless to say we are learning as we go and having fun each step of the way!

So who are we? Parents of two, millennials who don’t know what that means, and picture book lovers. As R.M. Halterman, we are a husband and wife writing and illustration team, each working in both areas. We created this website as a fun way to share our stories and hope others can share theirs. Our wish is to spark the imagination of as many as we can!
