What to expect: Ocean Animals and Life Lessons

On the day that Stella, a spritely and curious starfish, learns about humans from her teacher Miss Gloria, her desire to see the entire world blossoms. Her excitement is short-lived as her mother stresses the importance of never going near the shore or near the unkind, big humans that poke and prod starfish with sticks. Stella decides to go anyway, and she goes alone, lying to her mother about an after-school bubble-blowing lesson. When she is picked up by a big wave with a swoosh and plopped onto the shore, some vital life lessons unfold, allowing for some great after-story discussions. Should Stella have lied to her parents? What would have happened to Stella had the sweet human Sarah not found her ashore? Why was it caring of Sarah to place Stella back into the ocean? What do you think Stella’s parents will have to say about her adventure?

Stella the Starfish is a gentle story that concisely imparts lessons of integrity, thoughtfulness, and truthfulness. These lessons will not be lost on readers, especially those that do receive the opportunity to discuss the story after reading. The characters are sweet and the illustrations portray them well: Stella has a lovely pink bow and her dad has a fun 1970s mustache.

All in all, this is a sweet and enjoyable picture book for readers ages three through eight.
