What to Expect: Pueblo myth, friendship, art, self-discovery

Drawing on Pueblo mythology, Kachina tells a beautiful story about self-discovery and togetherness.

When Kachina the star looks down at Earth, she is so fascinated by the wonderful things that human beings can create that she wants to know more: how can human beings create such wonderful things together, despite being so different from one another? To help her discover the answer, Great Mystery allows her to be born on Earth as a human being. As a human being, Kachina can create anything she likes, and she learns to love to paint and draw. However, she can’t remember being a star, and when people are mean to her, she has trouble finding her inner light. However, as she works through these challenges, Kachina learns something important about human beings—and about herself.

With a rhythm reminiscent of a fairy tale, this book celebrates the ways human beings can be both unique and the same under the skin, as well as inviting readers to notice the beautiful world all around them. Vibrant illustrations glowing with color help to bring the story to life and draw attention to the beauty that Kachina creates and loves. At the same time, this is also a story about the love we can find in our families and friends, who can help us through difficult moments on our journey to self-discovery.

Kachina is a beautiful and uplifting story, perfect for bedtime.
