Are you ready for today’s poopcast?

Nobody is born with Poo shame (or any shame for that matter). The painful feelings of humiliation or feelings of being wrong is something we learn. The reaction given to a blowout diaper could even be the simple beginning of poo shame, but don’t be too hard on yourself, nobody enjoys a blowout diaper. Poop is certainly not pretty and typically a little on the stinky side, but the truth is that the way our bodies work is downright incredible—including digestion and excretion. Moms, dads, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunties, uncles, teachers, librarians, animals … all go poop! A simple thing we can do to promote body health and high self-esteem is to read books that encourage Poo pride. Just think about how amazing our bodies indeed are!

We can’t hold it in any longer, here are five fantastic (totally not crappy) picture books about bodily functions because everybody poops.

    Book Everybody PoopsEverybody Poops!

    Written by Justine Avery

    Illustrated by Olga Zhuravlova

“Taking the taboo out of POO!” This picture book unabashedly takes the shame away. With bright, often humorous (if you enjoy a little bit of potty humor) illustrations, readers see humans of all ages and genders sitting on toilets, potties, and using nature (you gotta go when you gotta go). Even the land and water animals poop! Author Justine Avery wants readers to walk away from storytime with poo pride! And we think that they will. This picture book would make a fun addition to the home library of those who are potty training and those that have a notorious “poop holder” in the house. Be prepared to giggle along as young readers go poop-spotting through the pages.

    Almost Everybody FartsAlmost Everybody Farts

Written and Illustrated by Marty Kelley

While we’re on the topic of defecation, it’s hard to avoid discussing flatulence. (When is flatulence ever hard to avoid, really?) Humor, next to reading, is a great way to open up discussion on uncomfortable topics. If you poop, then you surely toot! “Grandmas fart. Teachers fart. Terrifying creatures fart. But . . . is there someone who DOESN’T fart?” Do moms pass wind? If farts and giggles are your thing—we’re talking silent farts, farts like horns, and rainbow farts from unicorns—you’ll enjoy this colorful book.

Toot (Leslie Patricelli board books) By Leslie PatricelliToot

Written and Illustrated by Leslie Patricelli

With the recurring theme of everybody does it (Kitty, Doggie, Daddy — even Mommy!), Leslie Patricelli’s beloved bald baby takes on the flatulence topic. Farts don’t just make a toot sound; sometimes, they also sound like a train. The very youngest readers will enjoy the sounds of this board book—they’ll be giggling along for sure.

Lift the flaps in this book and children will discover all the places that creatures go poop: tigers in the jungle, kangaroos in the outback, and monkeys in the rain forest. Most importantly, readers will discover that they, too, have a special place to poop: the toilet! This book is a confidence booster for animal lovers.

Book What Is PooWhat is Poo?

    Created by Usborne

Some kids are naturally more curious than others. If you have a reader on your hand that often has lots of questions—What is poo? Does everyone do it? And where does it all go?—this book is informative. The pages are sweetly illustrated, there are lift-the-flaps for busy little hands, and there is also a Who did these poos? quiz to find out if those quizzical kids have been paying attention. Consider this a book to keep kids busy on the loo while they do their poo.

    Beyond the Book

Do you want to take the reading experience beyond the book? Here’s a fun game to play.

    Created by Laurence King Publishing

Not only is this game of matching over 25 animals with their scat a lot of fun, but it is also highly educational. The set also includes a booklet full of fun poop facts! Did you know that wombats poop in cubes? Whose poop is bigger—a hippo or a moose?
