Why, How, and Wow! Space: 150+ Stellar Answers to Kids’ Top Space Questions

Created by The Editors of Highlights

    Ages: 7+ | 192 Pages

    Publisher: Highlights Press (2026) | ISBN: 978-1-63962-319-8

What to Expect: Rockets, planets, astronauts, telescopes, Mars rovers, black holes, infographics, real NASA photography, and hundreds of kid-driven space questions answered.

An interactive, visually rich journey through space that blends facts, infographics, photos, experiments, and bite-sized explanations to let young readers explore the universe either sequentially or by curiosity.

Why, How, Wow! Space invites children to discover the wonders of space through a dynamic mix of layouts and media that feel more like an exploration than a traditional read. Readers can move from big-picture concepts—such as how the universe began and how our solar system works—to focused topics like rockets, astronauts, planets, and space technology. Each spread offers entry points for different interests, encouraging kids to follow the path set forth from beginning to end or hop between topics that spark their curiosity, all while steadily building understanding.

Complex scientific ideas are broken down into digestible explanations without feeling oversimplified—short text blocks, captions, and callouts make the information feel accessible and inviting rather than dense. Maintaining a sense of wonder that matches the subject matter, the writing is clear, enthusiastic, and exceptionally well-calibrated for its audience. The structure also reinforces comprehension: concepts introduced earlier are naturally reinforced as readers move through later sections, whether they read linearly or nonlinearly.

The illustrations, photographs, diagrams, and infographics are where the book truly shines. Each of the visual elements does more than decorate the pages—diagrams clarify how rockets launch and how planetary systems function, timelines contextualize space exploration, while photo spreads immerse readers in real-world imagery of space technology and celestial bodies. Thoughtfully designed, the varied layouts create a sense of motion and discovery on nearly every page, keeping engagement high while reinforcing understanding for both reluctant and eager readers.

Why, How, Wow! Space is a highly engaging nonfiction title that succeeds because of its smart design as much as its content. Children who love to browse, ask questions, and learn visually will find themselves returning to it again and again. It is especially well-suited for curious readers, classroom libraries, and families who enjoy books that can be explored in many different ways rather than read just once from cover to cover.
