By Sylvia Andrews, for The Children’s Book Review
    Published: December 30, 2010

Sylvia Andews has authored three children’s books: Butterfly Dreams; Song of Choson; Ivan the Terrible Cat; and If a Horse Can Loose Weight, so Can You! A library degree, Art History degree, and grade school teaching experience have nurtured her love of children’s books and given her an insight into what children like. She loves horses, and has dogs, cats, birds, fish and a pet opossum. Her next book is a mystery for teenage girls which takes place in Belize at an archaeological site and of course involves some animals and animal rights issues, romantic themes, and adventure. Other writing includes Indianapolis Murals, Outside Public Art and Mocha and his Friends, a how-to book about cartooning.

    Self-Published BookIVAN THE TERRIBLE CAT

A book about a terrible cat who “likes trash and rubble and all kinds of trouble even more than a mouse or a rat.” Includes drawings by the author and illustrations taken from art of Russian Palekh painting. A small section about the art of Palekh painting is appended. You will recognize your cat in Ivan and enjoy his antics. Fun for young and old readers.

Self-Published BookBUTTERFLY DREAMS OF SONG OF CHOSON

Song of Choson is a lonely mouse until he learns a secret from a friendly caterpillar and a drifting butterfly. A very hungry cat tries to thwart his plans, but thanks to his friends and an enterprising sea captain, he is able to realize his dreams. He invites a beautiful mouse from a visiting ship to afternoon cheese and lives happily ever after. A nice fable for all ages.

Includes quotes about butterflies from several sources and Korean brushstoke paintings by illustrator Audrey Camp.

    Quote example:

“I meant to do my work today.

But a brown bird sang in the apple tree,

And a butterfly flitted across the field,

And all the leaves were calling me.

And the wind went sighing over the land,

Tossing the grasses to and fro.

Anda rainbow held out its shining hand

So what could I do but laugh and go.

The Lonely Dancer, Richard Le Galliene, an English poet of French Descent

Self-Published BookIF A HORSE CAN LOOSE WEIGHT SO CAN YOU

A humorous book about an overweight horse, Tessie, and human friend Nessie, a fourth grade girl who meet and help each other loose weight. This is a fun treatment about a serious issue, childhood obesity. It suggests eating and exercise ideas to help kids cope with emotional eating, inactivity and unhealthy food choices, all of which lead to weight gain. Based on a true story of a horse gaining too much weight and endangering her health and a girl who cared about her. 2nd though 5th grade readers and parents can read to younger children.

    Illustrations by Shekhar and Company.
