    Rosie's Song byRosie’s Song

By Mary Kate Leming; Illustrated by Deborah LaFogg Docherty

OCEAN RIDGE, Fla. — (Jan.9, 2013) Stand at the shore, close your eyes, listen to the wind and you’ll hear “Rosie’s Song.”
It’s a subtle tune, but one that author Mary Kate Leming and illustrator Deborah LaFogg Docherty have brought to life in the book, “Rosie’s Song.”
The book follows the adventures of Rosie the Sea Star as she sets out to find her brothers, who she fears are lost in a storm.
“After living near the ocean for nearly 30 years, I recognized the importance of sharing a story of family love that is wrapped in a quiet message of ocean conservation and courage,” Ms. Leming said.
In “Rosie’s Song”, the happy life of a sea star among the coral reefs is threatened when a storm disrupts their home.
But Rosie and her brothers persevere, singing their family song:

“Together we will float and sway
And should we ever swim away
    We will never be alone
    Since we are family,
    we are home.”

Both Ms. Leming’s and Ms. LaFogg Docherty’s coastal roots run deep.

Ms. Leming is a former musician and librarian who has dabbled in filmmaking, screenwriting and Web content development. After more than 20 years as a research manager and editor at daily newspapers, she now co-owns and editsThe Coastal Star, which covers the towns along the barrier island, from South Palm Beach to Boca Raton.
This is her first published book.

Ms. LaFogg Docherty’s award-winning art combines her two great loves: nature and painting. Her favorite media are acrylics, oils and pastels (which were used for this book). Her paintings have been featured in museum shows, national and international art shows, books and magazines. This is the second children’s book she has illustrated.

    It already is receiving praise.

“What could be better than the warmth of a big, happy family and the love of the sea? ‘Rosie’s Song’ is essentially about family togetherness, but it sneaks in all kinds of lessons:  About being courageous and adventuresome, even if you are a girl. About protecting the precious creatures of the sea. About caring and loving your family best of all. The illustrations are just terrific,” writes Vicki McCash Brennan, former editor of South Florida Parentingmagazine, mother of two, retired classroom teacher. “Children will want to read this one over and over. Whee!”

Copies of the hardcover book are available for $20 online at Amazon.com and at several South Florida locations.

Leming and LaFogg are available for speaking engagements, readings and book signings.
