I’d like this book for the grandchildren’s library. My father taught the 5 of us children a valuable money lesson. He sat us down with our piggy banks and we played a game. He told us we would not get our money back if we used it in the game. Thinking he would give it back, I used all of mine. He did not give it back. That game stuck with me all of my life.

I learned from an early age to always buy within your means. Unless it is a house or a car, do not buy something unless you can pay it off right away. I am teaching my nieces to be frugal with their purchases.

If possible, do not put yourself in a position in which you pay interest on a purchase. A house, a car, a school loan–yes. But otherwise, avoid interest payments desperately. Make interest work for you, do not work for it.

The biggest lesson is that it pays to start saving (even very small amounts) early as opposed to saving more later.

I learned about compound interest in a real and literal way when my grandmother bought us each a savings bond when we were born. She explained how little it cost and how it grew over time. I used mine to help pay the cost of having a quilt I pieced machine quilted, in memory of my grandmother, who was a quilter. Since then, my partner and I have often bought bonds for the babies of our friends.
