    Cozy Critters on the Ark

What to Expect: Friendship, community, adapting to new places, the Biblical flood, diversity.

This picture book, Cozy Critters on the Ark, tells the age-old story of the Biblical flood and Noah’s Ark from the perspective of a mouse. It uses humor and familiar situations to teach readers the value of teamwork, community, and caring for others.

When a burst pipe forces Rufi to abandon his tree-house home, he decides to make a new house. Before he can start, however, he meets Noah—a human with a big job in front of him. Noah has been told that a BIG flood is coming, and he and his family and their animal helpers must build a boat to stay safe.

Rufi is good at building, so he decides to join Noah, and with his help, the Ark is finished in time! But life on the Ark is frightening as the flood waters rise, and it takes Rufi a while to settle in. Hard work and the friendship of his new human and animal friends soon work their magic, though, and when the Ark at long last finds dry land, Rufi not only has a new home—he has found a place where he truly belongs, a new family, too!

Rufi is hardworking and always willing to pitch in. As readers follow his adventure, they will learn that cooperation with others—even those very different from themselves—is the best remedy for difficult situations. The story is illustrated with digital artwork featuring bold lines and abstract shapes, lending it a mythic, dream-like quality that matches the Biblical context well.

Simple, accessible language paired with intricate visual details make this story both a wonderful introduction to the tale of Noah and an instructive exploration of community, togetherness, and family.

    About the Creators

Michael and Nicole Collazo are a dynamic husband-and-wife team from Southern California and creators of the Cozy Critters, the world’s greatest friends. Michael is the illustrator and uses a fun vibrant style that would captivate early readers of action-adventure comics. Michael and Nicole enjoy storytelling and making connections between children and their readers that are wholesome, whimsical, and fantastical. Both authors have artistic skills used only in their “hobby life” while majoring in the sciences and currently working in the government sector. Before debuting their picture book Cozy Critters on the Ark, they would create a cozy imagination world at home with their beloved guinea pigs that involved lots of tea, blankets, and snuggles.
