What to expect: Dental Hygiene and Rhyming Text

A vibrant and cheerful picture book, If the Dentist Were an Animal introduces basic dental hygiene with joyfulness and pizzaz.

A young girl is preparing for her dentist appointment. She wonders if she were to be greeted by an animal, what would that animal be and what would the experience be like? A fun cast of dentists is swiftly presented: a turtle, an octopus, a fish, a kangaroo, a dinosaur, and a lion. Each animal has a unique style that makes the dental experience fun. That is until we meet the lion. But, thank goodness there’s no need to fear. Dentists aren’t animals—they are people just like you and me. And just like that, the young girl is ready for her teeth cleaning.

Flossing, brushing, and nutrition are presented in an entertaining and light-hearted way thanks to Registered Dental Hygienist Rachel Grider’s knowledge and expertise. Her bubbly rhymes, which elicit giggles and promote positive emotions, flow with ease. Meeting the text with equal energy, the colorful artwork from illustrator Summer Morrison pops from the pages. She shows human dentists represented as a wonderfully diverse group of men and women of varied ethnicity. Rounding out the aspects of health, hygiene, and humor, the following well-crafted activities found in the end pages are a bonus: a quiz, word search, maze, an eye-spy ‘find the sugar bugs’ search, and a brush and floss chart.

Well-designed, thoughtful, funny, and practical, If the Dentist Were an Animal is a wonderful choice for all young readers, including kiddos that may be afraid to visit the dentist’s office. It is highly recommended.
