Snowing in HawaiiIt’s Snowing in Hawaii

    Written by Mike Guardia

    Illustrated by Melanie Stephens

    Age Range: 4-8

    Hardcover: 30 Pages

    Publisher: Willow Manor Clubhouse Books

    ISBN: 978-1939688149

What to expect: Hawaii, Alternative Setting, Rhyme, Winter

Breaking News: It’s snowing in Hawaii! Known for its iconic beach and warm tropical weather, Honolulu is given an alternative setting in this colorful new picture book by Mike Guardia.

It has never snowed in Honolulu and the weatherman asks, “Whatever shall we do?” Although they are confused by the weather, everyone embraces the wet, white snow while maintaining the Hawaiian spirit. Locals and tourists alike go sledding, build snow tikis and have snowball fights! They go bobsledding, skiing, and snowboarding. The local schools are closed and kids get their first ever snow day. Palm trees have icicles hanging from them and the local fare (coconuts, pineapples, and leis) freezes. Pearl Harbor has frozen over, too, so the sailors are all skating, while the surfers have traded in their surfboards for snowmobiles.

Blending Hawaiian highlights with blizzardy fun, Mike Guardia’s light tale is both amusing and rhythmic. Melanie Stephens’ illustrations are rich in color and life, bringing extra joy to the text with subzero tropical flare.

“Big Kahuna sings in a Hawaiian flannel shirt, while his hula dancers dance in bearskin hula skirts.”

It’s Snowing in Hawaii gives an interesting twist to a sightseeing journey through one of Hawaii’s most popular areas. Locals and visitors alike are bound to take a liking to this alternate situation that makes for either a warmhearted winter read or a breezy beach read.
