Little Lions First Readers: Book Cover

    Little Lions First Readers

Written and Developed by Karina Richland M.A.

    Ages: 3+ | 16 Pages per book

Publisher: Little Lions Literacy, LLC | ISBN: 978-8998624667

What to Expect: Decodable Books, Short Vowels, CVC Words, Children, Animals, and Pets.

Little Lions First Readers is a set of ten short, decodable phonics books designed to gently guide Pre-K and Kindergarten children through their first experiences with short vowel sounds and CVC words (three-letter words made up of a consonant, a vowel, and a consonant, like “cat,” “dig,” and “hen”).

From the moment young readers meet Max and his jam, they are carried through a charming cast of adorable animal characters—a napping cat, a digging pig, a hopping dog, a fox in fog, a muddy pup, a bug on a pug, and a hen fed by Ben—each one anchored to a specific short vowel sound and with a focus on CVC words, which are the building blocks of early decoding.

The writing does precisely what a first reader set needs to do: it stays out of the way and lets the words do the work. Simple but surprisingly engaging for their intended audience, there is just enough narrative momentum—Max has jam, Kit is six, the pup goes from mud to tub—to keep little readers turning pages.

Each of the ten 16-page books keeps the text sparse and purposeful, letting young readers focus on decoding without feeling overwhelmed. Building confidence one vowel at a time, the series opens with learning the short a sound and moves deliberately through i, o, u, and e—this progression from short a to short e is thoughtfully sequenced. The inclusion of red words (high-frequency words that don’t follow standard decoding rules) gives emerging readers a realistic bridge between sounding out and fluency. Helpful notes for families and teachers at the front of each book, along with comprehension questions and extension activities at the back, make these books as useful for guided reading as they are for independent practice.

The full-color digital illustrations of a diverse set of characters are a standout feature of this set—warm, inviting, playful, and genuinely adorable, they bring each little character to life in a way that makes the reading experience feel joyful rather than clinical. For a phonics book that could easily feel dry or textbook-like, the artwork strikes just the right tone, providing visual clues for the words on the page.

Little Lions First Readers is a wonderfully well-designed entry point into decoding for the youngest readers. It will be most enjoyed by Pre-K and Kindergarten children who are just beginning to connect letter sounds to words, and it’s equally valuable for parents and teachers looking for a structured yet cheerful tool to support that exciting milestone—a lovely addition to any early literacy shelf.
