Mighty Pax’s Misadventures: A Christmas Tail

    Written by Alessa Ellefson

    Ages: 4-6 | 36 Pages

    Publisher: Self-Published (2023) | ISBN: 9780989381468

What to Expect: Friendship, Christmas, home, helping others, resourcefulness.

This heartwarming Christmas story is all about finding the things you didn’t even know you needed.

On the day before Christmas, Pax finds a cold, lost kitten named Huey and decides to help her find a home. But what is a “home”? Neither Pax nor Huey is quite sure, but Pax is sure one of his friends will have the answer. All day long, they visit Pax’s friends, from Rupert the Worm to Miss Clementine the Goldfish, but even though they all offer explanations of home, none of those explanations feels quite right for Huey. Then, Pax finally figures it out—home is where your heart feels full! Huey knows just the place to find that, so off they go—and Huey has a new home, just in time for Christmas!

Helpful, friendly, and kind, Pax is the perfect canine protagonist, and readers are sure to enjoy laughing at Huey’s mishaps as she tries to mimic the lifestyles of the other animals she meets. The digital artwork is bursting with rich Christmas detail, from the candles that burn next to Miss Clementine’s tank to the Christmas sweaters Huey’s new family is wearing, creating the perfect holiday setting for the story. The text features mid-length sentences and an abundance of dialogue, making it ideal for more advanced picture-book readers. A quiz and a coloring activity at the end of the book provide additional opportunities for readers to engage with the text.

Mighty Pax’s Misadventures: A Christmas Tail is a lovely start to the holiday reading season for readers who love animals.

My hope, in writing this story, is for readers to realize that, no matter where they’ve been or are in life, they can find a place that feels like home to them, and that it’s OK if it doesn’t look like what everyone might think it should look like.
