Maggie Stiefvater is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the novels SHIVER, LINGER, and FOREVER. Her novel THE SCORPIO RACES was named a Michael L. Printz Honor Book by the American Library Association, while Publishers Weekly selected Maggie’s THE RAVEN BOYS as a Best Book of the Year. She is also the author of LAMENT and BALLAD. Maggie lives in Virginia with her husband and their two children. You can visit her online at www.maggiestiefvater.com.

    Spirit-Animals-Hunted-Book-2Latest published book …

Hunted, #2 in the Spirit Animals series. You’ll know it is me because of the Highland cows in it.

    You wrote it because …

I have an 8 year old son and a 9 year old daughter who were both very proud of my career—but weren’t allowed to read any of my novels. I very much wanted to write something for them. They both love animals (we have three dogs, a cat, a fish tank, a herd of cows, and five miniature silky fainting goats) and games, and it made sense to collaborate with Scholastic on a project that involved both of those things. And it worked! I am now a hero at their school.

    Favorite place to write …

I love my office, but touring has taught me I can write anywhere.

    Necessary writing/creativity tool …

Noise-canceling headphones and my ipod. Give me music, and I’ll give you a book.

    Favorite bookshop …

I partner with a Virginia independent bookstore, Fountain Bookstore, to offer signed and doodled-in copies of my books to my readers. They look exactly how you imagine an indie should look like: a narrow little store on a cobblestone road.

    Currently reading …

The Magician’s Land, by Lev Grossman, and Zen Ghosts, by Jon J Muth.

    All-time favorite children’s book you didn’t write …

The Grey King, by Susan Cooper. She was the first author who made me feel like mythology was really important.

    An author you idol …

Diana Wynne Jones had an incredibly productive career full of funny, true, and excellent books. I still remember opening one of her novels as a teen and glimpsing the page that started “books also by Diana Wynne Jones.” It was the first moment I realized this could be a career, and that could be my name.

    Favorite illustrator …

I have so very many that I love. I used to be a full-time colored pencil artist, did you know? [See Maggie’s artwork.] I suppose I will very reluctantly say Shaun Tan, because I do love how he incorporates story and whimsy into his art. But know that it is a lie, and I have too many favorites to list, and so I am only pretending to have just one for the purposes of this interview.

A literary character to vacation with …

Howl from Howl’s Moving Castle. Although perhaps we would be too similar for the vacation to really be enjoyable.
