Oh Vinny, The Perfect House: Book Cover

    Oh Vinny! The Perfect House

    Written by Lisa Ullrich

    Illustrated by Christina Michalos

    Ages: 4-6 | 32 Pages

Publisher: Little Heart Press (2025) | ISBN: 979-8-9951599-0-2

What to Expect: Pets, moving house, home, coping with change, and emotional regulation.

Told from the perspective of a delightfully distressed pup, Oh Vinny! The Perfect House is a touching and funny story about the frustrations and worries that can come with a big change to family life, such as moving to a new house.

Vinny loves his home—from his nice, soft bed to his favorite toy, it’s just perfect for him. One day, however, Vinny’s home feels less perfect than usual. His favorite star toy is missing. Vinny sniffs around everywhere for it—but not only can he not smell his star, but the whole house also smells wrong! His family is packing things into cardboard boxes and talking about moving to a new house, and they don’t seem to care that his star is missing.

Vinny gets madder and sadder, but still his star remains missing and his house smells all wrong. Finally, upset that his family doesn’t care about him anymore, Vinny runs away. It doesn’t take long for him to miss his family—but how will he find his way home? Vinny will have to follow his nose to sniff out his beloved family in their new home.

Vinny’s confusion about what is happening in his home is as endearing as his love for his family members, and young readers are sure to sympathize with his growing anxiety as the home around him changes from familiar and comforting to alien and unwelcoming (at least from his perspective). The easy vocabulary and short sentences beautifully evoke Vinny’s simple way of thinking, as well as keeping the text accessible for young readers.

The cozy artwork excels at using facial expressions, body language, and color to convey emotion, from Vinny’s sadly drooping head to the blue wash of rain that serves as the backdrop when Vinny realizes he is lost. Together with the puppy-perspective narration, these images help the reader spot Vinny’s misunderstandings and anticipate the happy ending to come.

Perfect for any reader who knows the frustration of having their worries unheard, Oh Vinny! The Perfect House is both reassuring and entertaining.

    About the Author

Lisa Ullrich is a children’s book author who believes that every story has a heartbeat. Guided by her faith and a deep passion for storytelling, Lisa writes from the tender, everyday moments of family life. When her family moved, she watched her children—and their beloved pup, Vinny— navigate the loss of the familiar. Favorite corners disappeared, routines shifted, and even treasured toys seemed to vanish into cardboard boxes. From that season of change, Vinny’s story was born. As a proud mother of three and a newly delighted grandmother, Lisa creates stories that offer comfort, courage, and the reminder that even when life feels uncertain, love always finds its way home.
