Pequeñas Perlas Little Pearls: Book Cover

    Pequeñas Perlas Little Pearls

    Written by Lisa Guy

    Illustrated by Cameron Shields

    Ages: 1-6 | 34 Pages

    Publisher: Lisa Guy (2024) | ISBN: 979-8-9887106-3-9

What to expect: Life lessons, rhyme.

Pequeñas Perlas Little Pearls is a bilingual gem of a book, written in Spanish and English for young children and their parents and caregivers.

Author Lisa Guy has distilled many of life’s most important tenets into rhyming couplets that will beguile readers with their simplicity. Starting with the importance of home and familiar routines, the story then branches out to encompass families, friends, and the greater world that is full of adventure and possibility. Young readers will be entranced by the gentle rhyme that will lull them to sleep but that also has the potential to awaken great curiosity.

The story is presented in both Spanish and English in a clear and clever translation that captures the depth and meaning of the author’s words. Paired with beautiful illustrations, readers will be able to instantly visualize the possibilities inherent in the text no matter which language they read the story in—and even if they aren’t reading the words. The illustrations brilliantly capture the essence of the rhymes in soft pastels.

To further aid readers and caregivers in exploring the themes in the book, the author has included a list of questions for further discussion at the end. The questions are sure to spark lively conversations of the sort that don’t always happen spontaneously. And perhaps the most important question centers around the use of technology and devices—and the importance of setting those things aside every now and then to enjoy the world around us.

    About the Author

Lisa Guy is a graduate of UC San Diego with a BA in Communications, a past business co-owner, and a mother of five. From a young age, Lisa has had an interest in people and their development – especially young children. After her third child was born, she stopped working outside the home and immersed herself in the lives of little ones. During her 30 years of volunteer work as a room parent, classroom volunteer, PTA and booster club leader, etc., she became passionate about finding ways to help young people reach their full potential. Lisa believes that the best way to ensure a child develops into a happy and productive adult is to have committed, supportive parents/caregivers and a community that he or she can trust, speak to, and learn from throughout childhood.

    About the Illustrator

Cameron Shields worked alongside her father in his art studio from an early age as he fulfilled his responsibilities as Art Director for an advertising firm. Ever-encouraging of her interest in the study of nature, he spent time with her walking and collecting samples of pond water, leaves, flowers, and other remnants of nature, which they examined at home under a microscope, and Cammy spent hours analyzing and drawing. After a career in healthcare and then later teaching science at the university level, Cammy resumed her passion for connecting with nature and exploring her environment through art, and began the practices of birdwatching and watercolor painting. Her whimsical illustrations are a result of her explorations, and bring readers on a meditative journey along California’s Central Coast.
