Danny Sabe Leer: Danny Can Read

Written by Diana Paola Navarro Gómez

    Illustrated by Carmen Blanco

    Ages: 4-8 | 38 Pages

    Publisher: Mr Momo (2025) | ISBN: 979-138-752-3121

What to expect: Big emotions, sibling rivalry, bilingual storytelling.

Danny Sabe Leer Danny Can Read is a charming story told in both English and Spanish about a pair of dinosaur siblings, Danny and Lily.

Known for their teamwork and ingenuity, Danny and Lily happily spend their days concocting new ways to play and have fun together. Their creativity and imagination are on full display when they put on shows for their parents or when they organize fun picnics. But then things change—in a surprising twist, Danny learns to read! At first, he’s just able to sound out letters and words but as his curiosity grows, he begins to string words together.

His world is completely changed as he spends his days reading and discovering new worlds and adventures. And as news of his skill spreads, dinosaurs come from far and wide to listen to the little dinosaur who can read. Amid all the new attention that Danny is getting, Lily is sidelined and she begins to have strong emotions. Frustration, jealousy, and sadness all begin to take hold and threaten to ruin her relationship with her sibling…until Lily decides on a new outlook and course of action—with marvelous results.

Author Diana Paola Navarro Gómez does a great job of showing readers how siblings can sometimes grow apart as they develop new skills and interests. Her portrayal of the difficult emotions that siblings can feel toward one another is refreshing in its honesty. Readers will feel the tension, in an age-appropriate way, and will enjoy the resolution and sense of harmony that comes about after Lily chooses to focus her emotions and her abilities in positive ways.

The story is presented in both English and Spanish in a wonderful translation that captures the depth of the siblings’ emotions—their happiness and their sadness—without losing any meaning. Dual-language learners will be able to seamlessly transition from one language to another, if they so choose.

This heartwarming story, with its beautiful illustrations, is a great way to show readers that difficult feelings can be managed and that everyone can find and build on their own individual interests.
