    Scar’s Thanksgiving

    Written by Vida Fernandez

    Illustrated by Shelby Faircloth

    Ages 4+ | 34 Pages

    Publisher: Palmetto Publishing (2023) | ISBN-13: 9798822932647

What to Expect: Dogs, Thanksgiving, gratitude, family, and Latino culture.

In this heartwarming, non-religious celebration of Thanksgiving, readers see this classic American festival afresh as they experience it through the unfamiliar and insatiably curious eyes of Scar, the rottweiler.

Loveable rottweiler Scar Fernández is back—this time in a Thanksgiving adventure! Scar doesn’t know what “Thanksgiving” is, but he knows something is going on. There is a commotion in the kitchen, and the house smells delicious and festive. It’s a bit of a mystery—what can it be that’s cooking in the kitchen oven?

Scar wakes up Vida, who explains the delicious smell is pernil, specially seasoned by Big Gladys. Scar learns that Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful and spend time with family, so visitors are coming for an important family gathering, and there is sure to be something special for Scar, too. What more could a dog ask for than a good family and good food?

As Scar learns about the traditions and values of a Latina Thanksgiving, readers are invited to think about what it means to be thankful for food, family, and other blessings. Rich watercolor illustrations bring both Scar and the holiday to life, blending shadows and warm colors to create a cozy atmosphere on every page. The prose is simple and inviting, perfect for reading and sharing aloud.

Scar’s Thanksgiving is an endearing holiday read, perfect for dog lovers!
