    The Children’s Book Review | October 22, 2018

What to Expect: History, Human Geography, Natural Geography, Interactive.

BigFoot isn’t real … or is he? In this wonderfully entertaining interactive series from D. L. Miller and Fox Chapel Publishing, the mystery of BigFoot – which spans a vast array of countries and continents – is put to good use making history, human geography, and natural geography fun and interactive. Readers are invited to follow BigFoot on his travels as he explores new places, people, cultures, landmarks, and natural wonders.

As anyone who enjoyed the Where’s Waldo? or Magic Eye books back in the nineties can testify, there is nothing that keeps kids occupied for hours on end like a book which requires extensive squinting and meticulous scrutiny. The BigFoot Seek-and-Find series is no exception: the intricate and densely layered illustrations are perfect for readers of any age and ability, and make learning visual and collaborative. While some of the details are easy to spot (purple butterflies in Paris, or playful orcas in the deep sea), but others – including the elusive BigFoot himself, are very well-hidden indeed. Most impressive of all is the wealth of information which is packed into each section: extensive fact pages which precede each search-and-find activity are supported within the activity itself by details which bring the scene to life: penjing trees in the Forbidden City, colorful parasols carried by pedestrians in Tokyo, the tourist sporting a camcorder at the Statue of Liberty. The illustrations are a skillful mix of detail and sketchiness, color and white space, which invite deep exploration without tiring out the eye. These books are fun as well as surprisingly educational, and are sure to offer many a happy rainy afternoon.
