The Loneliest Not Lonely Bear Book Cover

    The Loneliest Not Lonely Bear

Written and illustrated by Joseph S. Newman

    Ages: 6-13 | 24 Pages

    Publisher: Rosmerta Publishing (2023) | ISBN-13: 9781961666009

What to Expect: Loneliness, community, self-discovery, nature.

In this gentle, contemplative story, readers are guided to think about the difference between being alone and being lonely.

Bear lives all alone, but it never occurs to him to feel lonely until one day, Wolf asks him where his pack is and mocks him for living by himself. Bear thinks about Wolf’s words for a long time, but soon he realizes that he might be alone but is never lonely because he has the forest to keep him company: the sun and the breeze and the berries and the river. Then, one day, Bear goes to the river in search of fish and discovers that even if you are happy to be alone, there is a lot to be gained by making friends. The next time Bear has a conversation with Wolf, he has a lot to share!

Through the relatable animal characters, the story guides readers through the process of looking for contentment and fulfillment in the world around them, both within themselves and in the company of others. Vivid, slightly abstract illustrations add to the meditative, dream-like quality of the fable, and the story ends on a note of empowerment, reminding readers that they never have to feel lonely. A discussion question at the book’s end prompts readers to self-reflect and share their thoughts with others.

The Loneliest Not Lonely Bear is thought-provoking and heart-warming, perfect for shared discussion.
