    The Children’s Book Review

Pirate treasure? A clandestine meeting? A terribly rude monkey with personal boundary and hygiene issues?

    About the Book

The Splendid Baron SubmarineThe Splendid Baron Submarine

    Written by Eric Bower

    Illustrated by Agnieszka Grochalska

Publisher’s Synopsis: Waldo “W.B.” Baron is back with another amazing adventure in another incredible invention! Pirate treasure? A clandestine meeting? A terribly rude monkey with personal boundary and hygiene issues? Two of those things sound like a dream come true to W.B, whose clever inventor parents are hired―by the Vice President!―to go on a super secret and intensely important treasure hunt to repay a national debt. If only it weren’t for that lousy, rude monkey, it would be the beginning of a perfect adventure. But at least it isn’t squirrels…

The treasure hunt gives the Baron family the opportunity to use their exceptional steam-powered submarine, freshly biggened and ready for adventure! But things are seldom straightforward for the eccentric Baron family, and this treasure hunt is no exception. W.B.’s trademark bad luck has him suffering monstrous marine misfortune and marauding monkey misery.

Can the Baron family embark on their newest adventure without the eggy and depressing Aunt Dorcas? Will the Barons find the treasure they seek? Will they save the country from financial ruin? Where does the monkey fit in, anyway? Do we like asking questions? Not really, but inside you’ll meet someone who likes asking questions and then answering them (despite his claims to the contrary, he really does like it).

Oh, did we mention the pirate’s curse?

    Eric Bower

Eric Bower is the author of The Bizarre Baron Inventions series. He was born in Denville, New Jersey, an event of which he has little recollection, yet the people who were there have repeatedly assured him that it happened. He currently lives in Pasadena, California. His favorite type of pasta is cavatappi, his favorite movie is The Palm Beach Story, and he is the proud recipient of a “Beanology Degree” from Jelly Belly University in Fairfield, California. His wife and family have told him that the degree is nothing to be proud of, since “It’s not a real degree. You know that . . . Right?” and “Eric, they literally give them to everyone who visits the Jelly Belly factory,” but he knows that they’re all just jealous.

    About the Illustrator

Agnieszka Grochalska is an illustrator living and working in Warsaw, Poland. As a child she wanted to be an astronaut or a jet pilot. Eventually she changed her mind and dedicated her keen eye and steady hand to drawing precise and detailed compositions reminiscent of classical storybook illustrations.

She received a MFA in Graphic Arts in 2014, exploring traditional painting, printmaking, and sculpting along the way. Currently she works predominantly in digital medium, striving to make it look as natural as her works drawn traditionally. Her illustrative works were featured in group exhibitions both in Poland and abroad.

Agnieszka enjoys travel and cultural exchange with people from around the world, referencing those experiences in her works alongside the Slavic folklore of her homeland. When she isn’t drawing or traveling, you can find her exploring the worlds of fiction in books and story-driven games.

Agnieszka’s works can be viewed in her online portfolio at agroshka.com.

I think I would have a long talk to that rude monkey to straighten him/her out!! Believe my granddaughter would enjoy reading about this adventure. The treasure hunt would definitely peak her interest.

Any treasure hunt will grab the grandson’s attention. He’d love to read this. I’d probably leave the rude monkey behind.

About the monkey, make him follow the same rules as the children, like wash up before eating and so forth. I think our grandchildren would really enjoy this. Since allergies keep animals out of their house, they love watching animal type things.

“Answer one or both of these questions: How would you handle a terribly rude monkey with personal boundary and hygiene issues? Why are you excited to win this book?” I would carry spray bottles with me everywhere, one filled with soapy water and one with perfume, to spray at the little monkey.

The monkey needs to learn form example how to behave better at least most of the time. My five year old grandson has a jungle themed room and enjoys going to the zoo and nature center.

I would put a terribly rude monkey in time out and then tell him it is time for a bubble bath. Not forgetting to brush his teeth either. lol

I would hose that monkey down every time it came near me. I don’t know if that will work.

The monkey would have to learn manners and how to keep himself clean.

Love the question, actually stumped me a bit. Well, I believe teaching through emulation works wonders so, I would create a fun shower outside with lots of suds to clean up the monkey. As for his manners, well, I am an Alpha mentality LOL
