What to expect: Whale facts and illustrations, whale history

Does your child squeal with excitement when a whale jumps on the television screen? Does your child draw portrait after portrait of their favorite finned mammals? Then A BOOK ABOUT WHALES is the perfect choice!

Author Andrea Antinori presents whales with beautifully clean and spare illustrations. A tip of the eye or the cut of a toothy mouth lends personality and charisma to the whales. But let’s be clear, this isn’t just a compendium of whales, but rather a story about where whales come from and what they are like today. Antinori’s wry humor is sprinkled throughout, starting at the beginning of the book with a cheeky drawing of a humpback whale eyeing a fisherman’s hook. Antinori invites readers along on the whale adventure, and middle-graders will hop aboard for ocean adventure. Antinori’s voice is full of humor and joy celebrating these creatures, and a delight to read.

There are, of course, loads of facts. Did you know that more than fifty million years ago, whale ancestors walked on land (much like a hippo)? Did you know that toothed whales only have one blowhole, while baleen whales have two?

The end of the book lists whales one by one, with unique and eye-catching illustrations that capture the eye of any whale-lover. There is also a list of places for whale-watching places throughout the world, including the types of whales that can be seen.

An excellent gift for the whale-lover in your life, A BOOK ABOUT WHALES is a treasure in the ocean of children’s non-fiction books. Highly recommended.
