If You Were Me and Lived In series, written by award-winning author Carole P. Roman

The holidays are a great time to celebrate your family and your neighbors—and we don’t just mean your next-door neighbors. This season of celebrations is a wonderful time to encourage diversity, knowledge, interest, and mutual respect. Whether you observe Christmas, Hanukkah, Bodhi Day, Kwanzaa, the Winter Solstice, or any other celebration, we’re thrilled to share these books that allow young readers an opportunity to appreciate differences and see commonalities . . .

    Age Range: 4-10

    About the Books

If You Were Me and Lived In Italy Interior 2

It’s never too early to start teaching children about the world around them. Embraced by educators, parents, and children, the series gently and respectfully introduces the subjects of cultures and customs. Parents, grandparents, and teachers alike will love opening their children’s eyes to the world around them in a fun and easy way—and they’ll be happily surprised when they end up learning a few things themselves. It is the simplistic and positive way that award-winning author Carole P. Roman, a former social studies teacher, delivers the text, that makes this series appealing. The books are short and to the point and just what you want when you’re introducing geography and culture to the youngest reading set.

I’m the aunt who gives books every year for Christmas gifts. This sounds like a wonderful choice for my nieces and nephews, who are already bright, sensitive kids.

Now, I spend it with my family – reading the story of the birth of Christ – opening presents one at a time – and listening to Christmas music. Christmas baking is important – especially treats my mother used to make. When I was teaching elsewhere, I made cookies with/for my students, put up my six inch tree, and spent the day with other Canadian, American, British, and Australian teachers.

We have a multicultural family. It just happened naturally with whom my son’s married and our grandchildren became multicultural. People are really all just the same. We’ve traveled a lot internationally and yes there are cultural differences but people are still basically the same-love their families want to provide for them, etc. Want to teach my youngest grandchildren this.

I love this! My kids are really interested in geography andI’m always looking for ways to expose them to different cultures so this is great! In Iceland, they have a tradition of giving books to each other on Christmas Eve and then spending the night reading. Our family has kind of adopted the idea and it’s now our tradition too.
