What to expect: Emotional Intelligence and Life Lessons

The EQ Explorers series is a collection of animal and human adventure stories that aim to boost emotional intelligence. Each of the didactic tales focuses on a life lesson that encourages readers to manage their emotions positively while overcoming challenges.

Author Kim Linette effectively communicates these lessons in a clearly expressed manner with enough gentle humor to charm young readers. The challenges that the happy-go-lucky characters must overcome are kid-friendly, and any struggle is defused effectively. The books all follow the same format and include a “Let’s Explore” portion in which a set of questions are provided to encourage readers to truly tap into the essence of each story—these questions are great conversation starters. There are also fun facts about the starring animal, which will certainly interest animal lovers. And to round out the appeal, readers can look for small Buddy Bee within the pages of each book—you can find a clue at the end of the book on how many times he appears throughout.

The colorful, lush, winning illustrations demonstrate visually how the characters learn to value themselves and their uniqueness. The artwork shines on the glossy, thick pages that feel good to turn. Diversity and inclusion are also a part of the artwork as each book features a child with white, light brown, or dark brown skin.

Jojo Giraffe’s Big Laugh: Don’t Take Things Personally!

Written by Kim Linette

Illustrated by James Loram

Perspective and self-acceptance are the lessons a sweet girl named Kali learns from JoJo Giraffe in Jojo Giraffe’s Big Laugh. Whatever others say or do is from their perspective. Listen politely to others but trust yourself and spend time with folks who like you for you. Others’ opinions say a lot more about them than they do about you.

Written by Kim Linette

Illustrated by James Loram

Koa learns in Wally Whale’s Mighty Tail that “happiness is a choice.” It’s not what you have or what happens to you that brings happiness; it’s whether you think positively or negatively about them, that makes you feel happy. It’s also noted in the story that it’s not wrong to be sad—you may discover your mightiness in turning a bad time into a happy time.
