What to Expect: Language, cultural comparisons, differences, and self-esteem

Daisy is not at all sure about her family’s decision to move to the United States. She loved her home in London, where she fit in and had great friends. Her worst fears are confirmed when she starts school in her new home in Buffalo: her classmates are mean and jeer at her strange accent and different vocabulary. It’s tough to fit in when everything you say is “wrong.” Luckily, Daisy’s parents step in with a timely reminder: being different isn’t bad; it’s what makes each of us special and unique. Armed with this knowledge, Daisy tells her classmates she’s proud of her different accent and speech, and soon they become fast friends.

Daisy’s troubles are endearingly familiar for anyone who has had to learn to negotiate a new language after moving to a different country. English may be a single language, but there are thousands of dialects, and we are often too quick to judge others by the way they speak it. Daisy Moves to America is a humorous rhyming dive into the common language that separates Americans and Brits, with an important message for readers about accepting themselves and others. Particularly fun is the illustrated glossary of British vocabulary at the back of the book and the author’s invitation to readers to share new words with her on Instagram.

Combining some gentle language learning with an important message about self-esteem, this book is sure to leave readers with a smile.
