What to Expect: Sisters, dreams, imagination, adventure, bedtime.
In this gentle, dreamy picture book, readers will find thoughtful acknowledgement of how disorienting the rapid shifts in location and situation in a dream can be—but more importantly, warm reassurance that dreams are only dreams, and that even the scariest moments can transform into adventures.
When Lilly and Clara get tucked into bed with their pet bulldogs, Boo and Bee, bedtime becomes an occasion for an exciting voyage into the mysterious realms of dreams. First, the bed becomes a boat, floating the four dreamers on an ocean filled with dolphins, mermaids, and shipwrecks. Then, the boat becomes a rocket ship, flying to the stars, then a safari car, riding through the jungle to the chatter of birds. A sled comes next, tipping them down the steep side of a snowy mountain before … thump! It has tumbled them back into their bed to greet the rising sun of a new day. What a dream!
The story handles potentially frightening moments—storms, black holes, and even the loss of control of their car—with particular skill, always resolving these instances into new and exciting adventures. The cozy family group remains together through it all, creating a sense of security that helps keep the dream world feeling safe rather than threatening.
The muted colors and rich detail of the dream scenes emphasize this gentle otherworldliness, offering little clues throughout that the sisters and their pets have not really left their beds. The rhythmic lines of text, which sometimes fragment and tumble down the page, add excitement to the reading, and the story ends on a bright and positive reminder: that the real world of daytime is just as full of magical moments as dreams are.
The Dreamland of Clara, Lilly, Boo, and Bee is a picture book that will especially resonate with young dreamers who experience bedtime anxiety or vivid dreams, offering them a comforting and practical framework for understanding that nighttime adventures—no matter how wild—always lead safely back to morning.
