What to Expect: Fear of change, environmentalism, pirates
Change can be frightening and hard to accept. Captain’s Secret Identity and the Cotton Candy Ship, the second book in the Cotton Candy Ship series, helps readers to navigate change without fear by modeling techniques like positive thinking, curiosity, and openness.
Captain Elaine Mermain may look as sweet and fluffy as her cotton candy ship, but those who’ve tangled with her know she’s a force to be reckoned with—especially to those who even think of polluting her beloved ocean. But if there’s one thing she can’t handle, it’s change. That’s why she feels a shiver of fear when the mysterious Mariko Morosight predicts a change for Elaine (and her ship) is on the horizon. But, before she can warn Elaine about the dangerous pirate with the dog bone and octopus buckle she has seen, the changes have already begun.
First, damage to the previously indestructible rainbow mast of the ship; then, an insect-like monster attacks the ship and pushes Elaine into the sea! Will anything ever be the same again for the Cotton Candy ship?
Elaine is an engaging protagonist, and as well as showing readers that admitting to fear is okay, she is also a fantastic role model for qualities like leadership, empathy, and inclusivity. Colorful digital illustrations emphasize that this is not just an instructive tale: there are mermaids, pirates, magic ships, talking turtles, and terrifying villains to get to know as well!
Captain’s Secret Identity and the Cotton Candy Ship is a funny, exciting, instructive fish tale for young readers.
