Krystal Winkle and Galloping Giuseppe: book cover

    Krystal Winkle and Galloping Giuseppe

    Written by Carolyn Roth-White

Illustrated by McKenzie Bunting & Pablo Ricatti

    Ages 9-13 | 232 Pages

    Publisher: Self-published (2024) | ISBN-13: 97805782359755

What to Expect: Friendship, family, problem-solving, self-discovery, magic, and travel.

As a sequel to Krystal Winkle and the Peacemaker of Kigali, this story transports readers on another international adventure, this time to the catacombs of Rome.

Krystal isn’t just any 10-year-old girl – she’s a Cristalli, which means she wields enormous magical power. It also means she’s a target for trouble. Previously, she’s used her power to save a beloved silverback gorilla in Kigali while avoiding the Cristalli hunters of the evil Queen Mara. Now, after moving from Kigali to Rome, Krystal has a new adventure in front of her—and this one takes place deep underground amidst a frightening world of skeletons, ghost pirates, and mythical elders. With the help of Giuseppe, a beautiful Lipizzaner horse, she must both expose a thief and escape the Cristalli huntsman—and all before their temporary stay in Rome is over!

Krystal is a vivacious and determined protagonist, and the series as a whole is filled with a whimsical cast of characters, from a loyal rat to gift-giving gypsies and an undead pirate with a pet rabbit. The adventure is fast-paced, following Krystal on a danger-filled journey through the catacombs while simultaneously giving readers a close-up tour of the history and culture of Rome through beautifully detailed scenic descriptions.  Black-and-white sketches bring critical scenes to life, and the language is complex enough to challenge middle-grade readers without being inaccessible.

Krystal Winkle and Galloping Giuseppe is a captivating addition to the Krystal Winkle series, perfect for readers who love adventure and magic.

    About the Author

A dentist for 30 years, Carolyn Roth-White began her whimsical fantasy-adventure series in retirement. Her stories come from her love of travel and animals and a desire to encourage young people to learn about cultures other than their own. Each novel takes the reader around the world, showcases an animal at risk, and merges pure magic and escapism with real-world settings.
