    Aydin Stays Safe: Book Cover

    Aydin Stays Safe

    Written by Z.Z. Özra

    Illustrated by Tammy Do

    Ages: 3-8 | 34 Pages

    Publisher: Kinyarrow (2025) | ISBN: 979-8992992823

What to Expect: Neurodivergent representation, safety education, autism awareness, animal companionship, accessible learning, and family support.

Not just another safety book for children, Z.Z. Özra’s debut picture book, Aydin Stays Safe, is a thoughtfully designed story that recognizes how neurodivergent children experience and learn about the world around them.

The endearing protagonist, Aydin, has a curiosity and sense of adventure that will resonate with many young readers, as his tendency to explore through touch, taste, and bold investigation reflects the authentic experiences of children who process their environment differently. The relationship between Aydin and Sam (a poodle) forms the heart of the story—Sam’s role as a patient, protective companion offers a model of support that never feels restrictive or judgmental. Through Sam’s gentle “Ruff!” interventions, children learn that safety guidance can come with love and understanding rather than harsh correction. This approach will be especially meaningful for families navigating similar challenges.

Özra’s personal experience as a mother to a child with autism infuses the narrative with an authenticity that goes beyond surface-level representation. From touching hot objects to approaching unfamiliar dogs, the scenarios Aydin encounters are drawn from real-life experiences, making the safety lessons both practical and relatable. The writing maintains an encouraging, adventure-positive tone throughout, successfully communicating that staying safe doesn’t mean limiting exploration—it means learning to explore smartly with trusted guides by your side.

Working hand in hand with the text to create multiple entry points for learning are Tammy Do’s adorable illustrations—her artwork perfectly complements the story’s warm, supportive tone, capturing Aydin’s joy and curiosity while depicting safety concepts without being frightening or overwhelming. The accessible design, featuring clear text and contrasting illustrations that highlight safe versus unsafe situations, demonstrates thoughtful consideration for diverse learning styles. For families, educators, and therapists working with children who need specialized approaches to safety education, Aydin Stays Safe offers both a valuable teaching tool and an affirming story about difference, growth, and unconditional support.

    About the Author

Children’s author Z.Z. Özra has always loved visual stories and illustrated books. When she decided to write a picture book, she didn’t have to look far for inspiration. Aydin Stays Safe was created for her son, who is autistic with additional needs, and the story is based on his experiences. It is a book that Z.Z. hopes will help other children like Aydin the character, understand which types of playful exploration are risky or safe.

Z.Z. gets information for her stories both from the life of her son and from her homeschooling experience, which enabled her to teach him the way that he learns. It was some of her son’s traits that drew her to see parallels in her personal history, which led to her own late diagnosis of autism. She hopes young readers come away from her story with a sense of adventure and a learning lesson that stays with them long after the book is closed.

When she isn’t writing, Z.Z. loves reading, going to the beach, and hanging out at the parks with her five children. She and her husband live with their family in Southern California. Aydin Stays Safe is her debut picture book with plans to write additional stories that expand on safety, inclusion, and accessible learning.
