Coloring the Rainbow: The Power of Connection

    Written by Catherine Rose

    Illustrated by Jeff Dale

    Ages: 3-8 | 32 Pages

    Publisher: Beaver’s Pond Press (2023) | ISBN:

What to Expect: Diversity, creativity, imagination, music

Through the metaphors of color and music, Coloring the Rainbow teaches readers about the power of human connection to spark joy, wonder, and happiness.

Once upon a time, a little boy sat alone, playing his trombone. Although he loved the deep sound it made, he wondered if there were more sounds to be heard in the world, so he took his trombone outside and began to play in the streets, inviting all the children around him to add their own notes. From the piccolo and bagpipes to trumpets and strings, the children lend their unique sounds to the melody, creating something new and magical. Then, from their brave new sound, something wonderous is born—a rainbow born from the merging of each unique sound fills the sky with color!

Without being overtly instructive, the story carries essential messages about diversity, working together, and embracing uniqueness. At the same time, the story celebrates the joy that comes from sharing imagination and creativity with others. Quirky, dream-like, colorful illustrations show instruments and animals bursting with life and energy, while simple rhyming text invites readers to find their own rhythm and pace as they read.

Coloring the Rainbow is an easy, joyful story to add to any collection of books about diversity, connectedness, and creativity.

Catherine Rose is enjoying that time of life when one thinks of creating a legacy.  What are the lessons learned from living life’s adventure that would benefit generations to come?

As a pediatric nurse, she wrote therapeutic stories to help children cope masterfully with injury and illness.  Her present stories weave tales with similarly empowering messages to support children’s development of resilience, confidence and empathy.

Rose writes from the back porch of her log home, inspired by the profile of Mount Jefferson in North Carolina. Married to her high school sweetheart, they now enjoy perpetual recess with their two grandchildren, whose favorite activity is to read a book written by Nana!
