What to expect: Social-Emotional Learning and Kindness

The Dynomike Teaches series has a new delightful addition with Pay it Forward. A peppy picture book that encourages spontaneous acts of kindness with no expectation of receiving anything in return.

Dynomike heads out to the store for a jar of tasty strawberry pickles. When he discovers the pickles are all sold out, he doesn’t let it ruffle his scales. Instead, he leaves the store with a cheery smile. He spots Spunky, his purple gorilla friend, having trouble pushing a wagon of bananas. Dynomike doesn’t hesitate to offer a hand. Spunky wants to repay his friend for the help, but Dynomike insists there is no need to repay. He suggests Spunky pay the effort forward by helping someone else today. And so begins a rewarding chain of events with friends helping each other in spots of trouble. The day ends full circle with a heartwarming ending that may just include a jar of strawberry pickles and a glorious sunset shared by friends.

The cool comic book style artwork is inviting and pops from the pages with bright colors. The halftone technique is a great touch, adding dimension and tone to the illustrations through the use of dots. The repetitive language used throughout is catchy, attainable, and affective:

    “[N]o need to repay.

    Just pay it forward.

    Help someone today.”

If spreading kindness is important to you—and we hope it is—Dynomike: Pay it Forward is a winner. It’s upbeat, cheery, and full of high-fives!
