What to expect: Mindfulness and Meditation

There is no denying that our children’s brains are busy on an average day. Now add in the often-unavoidable daily interactions with screens and technology, and parents can see that young developing brains need more opportunities to unplug and relax. Using an analogy that even the youngest reader will understand, award-winning author Susan B. Katz introduces the concept of meditation, a useful tool for finding focus and mindful inner peace.

Young children are fascinated by things that go. Katz uses this to great advantage by constructing the conscious connection that thoughts are like trains speeding by on railroad tracks, one after the other. When we take control of our breath and become present, we can begin to sit with our thoughts or choose to let them roll on past. We can become the conductor learning to calm our mind and body. Katz’s delivery of words is clear and concise, making this interpretation of meditation easy to grasp. It also helps that Anait Semirdzhyan’s adorable illustrations feature a friendly, sweet bear as the main character, who is always smiling and radiates happiness on each page.

Without a doubt, this book provides children with a strategy that will help them find daily focus and a sense of calmness by encouraging them to get in touch with their body through a mindful practice. Meditation Station is an outstanding choice for parents looking to introduce their children to the practice of meditation and teachers looking to incorporate mindfulness into their lesson plans. Highly Recommended.
