My wife Rebecca and I have four sons, and as they grew up, bedtimes and long car trips and summer vacations were endlessly enriched by great writers and illustrators. Picking only five was tough, as our debt of gratitude extends to so many others as well.

    By E.B. White

This book is wonderfully wise and flawlessly written, and it’s also a grand example of what an illustrator can bring to a novel. The teacher in me has given everyone in our family a long term assignment: read Charlotte’s Web every five years for the rest of your life, with the promise that each time it will offer something new and profound. I think it is one of the best novels ever written in English. When I need to get inspired about writing, I read E.B. White.
