    Ghosts of Autumn

    Ghosts of Autumn

    Written by Amy Gorder

    Illustrated by Isaac Peterson

    Ages: 9-14 | 118 Pages

Publisher: Emerald Books | ISBN: 9781954779723

What to Expect: Ghosts, goldrush era, mystery, friendship, and problem-solving.

Spanning two centuries and intertwining narratives, Ghosts of Autumn is a ghost story that weaves together the small-town politics of modern America with the historical realities of the California Gold Rush era.

When the city decides to tear down the ramshackle old Elk Grove Hotel, most people think it’s a good thing—the building is dangerous and ugly, and tearing it down will make way for new developments, like a lucrative golf course. However, When some town kids sneak inside for one last look, they find way more than they bargained for: a book of clues and ghosts who beg for their help. But will Amelia and her friends even be allowed to help the ghosts when the town mayor has his own personal, years-old grudge against the old hotel and the ghosts living there?

Chapters alternate between the nineteenth century and the present day, inviting readers to think about history and how it is made. Amelia and her friends are relatable characters with familiar worries and dreams, and their support for each other and their town is realistic and heart-warming. The story draws heavily on real history, and genuine gold rush era photographs punctuate the story, allowing readers to glimpse the past.

Ghosts of Autumn is a fun and edifying ghost story—readers in the Sacramento area will find it especially compelling.

    About the Author

Amy Gorder loves to share her fondness for spooky stories intertwined with California Gold Rush history. She was born and raised in the Central Valley of California, where ghosts of 1849 loom large. She lives in Elk Grove, California, along with her husband, Chris, and together they have four children and ten grandchildren. As a mother, grandmother, and elementary school teacher, she has learned that nothing grabs a child’s attention faster than a spooky ghost adventure. And if history is learned along the way, all the better! Ghosts of Autumn is her first children’s book and the first book in the Gold Rush Ghosts series.
