    Guardian of the Groceries Book

    Guardian of the Groceries

    Written by Michael Albanese

    Illustrated by Laura Kirkland

    Ages 4-6 | 40 Pages

Publisher: The Weight of Ink | ISBN-13: 978-1-732-898-707

What to Expect: Adventure, Make-Believe, Family

Henry is bored. Sitting on the steps of his house, he wonders what he can possibly do with such a boring day. Then, his mother proposes going to the most boring place in the whole world: the grocery store! Could his day possibly get any more boring? Just when he thinks he can’t take the boredom anymore, things start to get exciting. First, his shopping cart transforms into a spaceship, with him as Captain. Then, he battles a ferocious cereal box monster (using lactomissiles); a sticky, stinky cheese monster (using a fiery blow-torch); and the terrible Broccolisaurus monster. By the time they finally reach the checkout, Henry has to admit that his mom was right—the grocery store isn’t so boring after all!

Complaints about boredom are familiar to most parents (especially during the current lockdown), and it can be difficult to know how to deal with them. Even for adults, it can be hard to find anything exciting about mundane chores like the weekly shop. And, with so many children becoming used to turning to expensive toys and digital media for entertainment, it can sometimes feel like the important childhood traditions of fun are being lost. Guardian of the Groceries is valuable because it reminds readers that with a little bit of imagination, anything can be fun—even a trip to the store. Full of humor that is emphasized by the bright, comic book-like illustrations, Guardian of the Groceries celebrates the power of imaginative play and its ability to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. It’s a fun story for bored young readers everywhere.
