What to Expect: Helping others, small acts of kindness, and independence.
In this charming retelling of Noah’s ark, readers will meet kindhearted and resourceful Mark, who is willing to put his own needs on hold to help out others in distress.
There’s a storm coming—and Mike is out of peanut butter and jelly! With $5 from his mother, Mike sets out to reach the store for resupplies before the storm can start. However, on his way, he meets some new friends who really need his help staying safe from the coming bad weather. There’s a pair of caterpillars celebrating their anniversary, a family of birds with newborn chicks who aren’t very good at staying in the nest, and a family of ants with nothing but leaves to make a rain shelter.
Mike has a brilliant plan—they can all take shelter in his tree house. But he’s so busy getting them settled in, he forgets all about his trip to the store! Luckily, word has gotten around that Mike has a safe shelter, and as more animals turn up, one of them has a wonderful surprise for Mike…
His crew of new animal friends is colorful and whimsical, and readers will enjoy seeing the number of odd companions in the treehouse multiplying page after page. The vibrant artwork is a real strength of the story, using watercolor and pencil in vivid, saturated colors to bring both the storm and the vulnerable animals to life for the reader. Short paragraphs, combined with complex sentence structure and vocabulary, provide a more challenging reading experience, perfect for readers who are developing toward chapter-book reading.
Treehouse Rescue is a wonderful choice for shared reading and discussions concerning small acts of kindness in the community.
