What to Expect: Bedtime, dreams, imagination, adventure, curiosity.
In this picture book for young readers, lyrical text celebrates the limitless creativity of a baby’s imagination as it takes them on a journey through dreamland.
The sun sets … the moon rises … eyes drift close … it’s time for adventure! Sleep is a time for rest, but it’s also a time for adventure and exploration, because when you go to sleep, dreamland is waiting for you! It’s a wild ride to get there, following shooting stars, floating in hot-air balloons, and tumbling through fragments of imagination. Sometimes it can be a little bit scary—but things always work out in the end. From flying with aliens in space and swimming with jellyfish and turtles under the sea, to meeting balloon animals, grumpy cows, and dancing giraffes, nighttime visits to dreamland are full of surprises!
Depicting dreams as a joyful and safe space for exploration, the child narrator is curious and brave, admitting to moments of fear but still receptive to each new experience the dream world has to offer. Along the way, a whimsical cast of imaginary creatures helps frame the imagination as a place of connection rather than loneliness, where friends can be made, and adventures can be shared. The illustrations feature a rich color palette, against which the black-and-white of the baby protagonist stands out sharply, reminding the reader that the story is only a dream, while the rhyming text is perfect for reading aloud to young listeners at bedtime.
Perfect for any young reader with a lively imagination, Where I Go When I Sleep is especially good for children who need some reassurance at bedtime.
