Elephants DO Forget: How Emory Found His Memory

    Written by P. E. Shadrick

    Illustrated by Amanda Letcher

    Ages: 4-7 | 32 Pages

    Publisher: P. E. Shadrick (2025) | ISBN: 979-8991234054

What to Expect: Old age, forgetfulness, friendship, helping others, kindness, adventure

In this sweet and empowering picture book, readers will meet an elderly elephant who doesn’t let his failing memory stop him from having fun.

Elephants aren’t supposed to forget—but Emory has, and now he can’t remember why he’s walking through the forest … or how to get home! Luckily, there are some friendly folk in the forest who are ready and willing to help out a confused elephant—a parrot and a frog step in to help him find his way home. By asking the right questions and staying positive and cheerful, they not only help Emory remember just enough but also make sure he feels safe and loved along the way. Soon, Emory is safe back with his tribe—and the parrot and frog have a whole tribe of new friends!

Emory is adventurous and resilient, and readers are sure to admire the fact that he doesn’t let his memory loss slow him down or frighten him. Frog and Parrot, on the other hand, are loveable characters who model for readers how to kindly and effectively guide someone who is confused. The simple rhyming text adds to the upbeat, positive mood of the text, as do the brightly colored illustrations of jungle life. Best of all, the story has a happy ending, illustrating to readers the powerful message that small acts of kindness can have a significant impact on the lives of others.

Subtle and gentle in its messaging, this is a wonderful book for sparking discussions about helping others.
