¡HOLA! Let’s Learn Spanish by Judy Martialay gives your child 6-10 a fun and early start in learning Spanish. It can be used by parents, grandparents, teachers, librarians, etc., whether or not they know Spanish, and it makes a great gift for birthdays, holidays or any time of the year.
The audio version of the book is on http://polyglotkidz.com , and it should be downloaded before beginning so that you can hear the authentic Spanish pronunciation. There are pauses after the Spanish words so that it is easy to repeat and learn.
Kids love a story. The book begins with an imaginary trip to Mexico, where children learn their first Spanish words. When they arrive in Mexico, they follow the adventures of Panchito the Mexican Jumping Bean. They are drawn into the story and the culture while learning more Spanish.
Children learn best by being physically engaged. This is the concept behind many of the activities to practice Spanish, including a treasure hunt for objects and people around the house, and a skit where kids act out the lines as they are saying them. Other activities include a Culture Corner, song, and directions for making a traditional Mexican mask.
On the Parents’ page, you will find advice on learning Spanish, tips for using the book, and links to interesting articles on learning languages. There is also a free downloadable game that parents and children can use as a review after finishing the book.
I hope that you will enjoy the book. It’s an excellent chance for you to review or start to learn the language and a fun activity to share with your family.
Give your child the gift of an early start in learning Spanish, and see that he or she has the opportunity to continue study of the language in elementary school and beyond.
It was written by a retired teacher of foreign languages with input from experts in the field.
