    HOLI COLORS by Deven

    Holi Colors!

    Written by Deven Jatkar

    Ages 4-12 | 40 Pages

    Publisher: MonkeyMantra | ISBN-13: 9780997718157

What to Expect: Indian culture, Holi, family, and perspective.

From the same author as Bakaasur: The Ice Cream (Maker) Monster, Holi Colors! is a humorous, gentle story about the classic Indian festival of Holi, told in the context of a modern-day family and their holiday preparations.

Maya loves colors, so Holi is one of her favorite times of the year. However, this year, while Maya is busy preparing for all of her favorite Holi activities, something terrible happens. Running to answer her grandfather, she accidentally trips over her favorite kaleidoscope toy, and suddenly, the whole world goes black!

When Maya wakes up, the colors are all wrong: everything looks black and white, and the people are purple, green, and blue—the world is a terrifying place with all the colors in chaos! Will Maya be able to enjoy Holi will all the colors missing? Will the colors ever come back? Only time will tell!

For readers not already familiar with Indian festivals and culture, the story offers instructive glimpses of Indian language, culture, society, and family life. At the same time, the story explores the idea of change and perspective, asking readers to think about how they see the world and how that perspective shapes their experiences and emotions. Jatkar’s signature intricately detailed cartoon illustrations bring the Indian family and town to life, as well as adding lots of information about Indian culture.

Just in time for Holi, Holi Colors! is the perfect read for anyone preparing for this colorful festival—or who wants to learn more about it.
