What to Expect: Social-emotional learning, empathy building, classroom dynamics, friendship skills, and personal growth.
Azizi Tuere has crafted a fresh story that captures the playground dynamics that every child recognizes while offering genuine insight into social-emotional growth. Transformation, thoughtful kindness, playground wisdom, emotional intelligence, and learning when to speak up versus step up are the insightful and well-delivered themes of I Told You So!
Maxine the Megaphone has a talent for spotting trouble before it happens—and an even bigger talent for making sure everyone knows she was right when things go wrong. But when her constant “I told you so!” starts pushing friends away instead of bringing them closer, this bold little megaphone discovers that being smart isn’t the same as being wise. Maxine isn’t a villain—she’s a well-meaning character whose intelligence becomes a barrier to connection when used without empathy.
This relatable story validates every child’s desire to be heard while simultaneously teaching them more effective ways to contribute to their communities. Thanks to Tuere’s nuanced approach to such a common childhood challenge, Maxine’s transformation feels authentic because it comes through observation and reflection rather than a lecture about being nice. Rather than simply telling children to be quiet or stop correcting others, the narrative cleverly shows how the same keen awareness that fuels “I told you so” moments can be redirected toward genuine helpfulness.
The included discussion questions and activities extend the learning beyond the story itself, making it perfect for classroom discussions about friendship, empathy, and constructive communication, through concrete examples of how children can channel their intelligence into kindness.
Yasasri Maliyawadu’s vibrant illustrations bring warmth and energy to every page. The visual storytelling effectively shows the shift from isolation to connection as Maxine learns to use her observational skills for helping rather than proving points. Maxine’s megaphone design is both playful and expressive, allowing readers to see her emotions clearly.
I Told You So! succeeds as a thoughtful addition to social-emotional learning libraries because it respects both the character’s intelligence and the reader’s ability to understand complex social situations.

About the Author
Children’s author Azizi Tuere has known since she was a child that she wanted to be a storyteller. But it was her own child, her twelve-year-old daughter, whose debut publishing venture inspired Azizi to pursue her dream. Azizi’s Because I Am… children’s picture book series are positive and heartwarming books to help families grow closer and build self-worth at an early age in children.
“I’ve seen firsthand how the world can chip away at a child’s confidence,” Azizi shares. “My books are my way of arming families with the tools to build a fortress of self-love together. Because strong, confident families don’t just change lives – they build a better world.”
As a homeschool mom to two teen daughters and a global citizen, Azizi, an American from New York City married to her Norwegian husband, draws from her rich tapestry of cross-cultural experiences, as a location-independent family, to create universally resonant stories. Their global lifestyle, which began with the birth of their first child in London, has taken them from the fjords of Norway to the vibrant streets of Mexico, where they currently reside. This global perspective infuses her work with a unique blend of cultural insights and universal truths about childhood and self-discovery.
Beyond her books, Azizi is a Parent Leadership Mentor, offering workshops and one-on-one coaching to help parents raise confident, resilient children. She also hosts and produces tinygreenchef.com, a plant-based cooking program for kids, reflecting her belief in holistic education that combines nutrition, creativity, and family bonding.
“Every aspect of a child’s life is an opportunity for growth and self-discovery,” Azizi explains. “Whether it’s through stories, cooking, or simply exploring nature together, we can help our children build a strong foundation of self-love and resilience.”
