Katie Karalana and The Mysterious Serious Nose EmergencyInspired by a little girls startling observation, this book succeeds at stirring up laughter and giggles from children and grown-ups as they turn through its forty two pages of grandpa versus granddaughter dialog and illustrations. The lead character, Katie Karalana, seems convinced that an unwelcome alien has taken up residence in her grandfather’s nose. Grandpa is skeptical but, for reasons only he could explain, is persuaded to cooperate with a series of Katie’s creative and resourceful attempts to investigate and remedy the situation. Katie is very persistent and insistent. Grandpa exhibits attributes of patience, humor, love, curiosity and courage: up to a point!

A child’s unimpeded imagination and spontaneous evaluation of what she observed provides a platform from which to launch this humorous episode. The progressively riskier steps Katie Karalana dreams up to address the perceived threat within Grandpa’s noble nostril are fictional. But the reader has to wonder whether or not such a scenario might have actually taken place.

In addition to offering a highly entertaining experience, this story leaves the reader with judgements to make. What did Katie actually believe she saw? Might she have had a plan: a hidden motive or scheme in mind all along? What did Grandpa actually think about the situation and why did he cooperate? Here is an endearing glimpse at one of those unique relationships that can develop between grandparents and grandchildren. Katie Karalana and . . . The Mysterious Serious Nose Emergency is appropriate for ages four to ninety four!
