Book About PeruKusikiy: A Child from Taquile, Peru is a story that draws us into the kaleidoscopic and mysterious world of a Peruvian child. Children identify with  Kusikiy’s love for family, with  his concerns for the effects of climate change and his desire to help his town. When a constellation is missing from the sky, Kusikiy flies with Condor to the hightest snowed peak to ask the APU, the Guardian Spirit of the great glacier for his help.

Kusikiy enjoys his adventure and learns form his great grandparents the sacredness of the Great Glaciers. The Town rejoices with a festival when they see the stars returning to the sky .

Mercedes Cecilia, author and illustrator, has created a myth following in the tradition of her Peruvian ancestors. This story  reminds us to treasure the universal values of love, family, community and caring for the Earth.

The story of Kusikiy: A Child from Taquile, Peru,  illustrates the importance of living in harmony with the environment and captures the spirit of a small community of the Andes. This original story with its unexpected adventures of Kusikiy, the main character, delights readers and reinforces their ability to question today’s ecological changes. The author reveals her native vision in  the dialogue between Kusikiy and the glacier:

“…You are the Great Glacier, your river of snow forms our valleys and the mountains. You are the keeper of our homeland.”

About the author: The author and illustrator, Mercedes Cecilia, was born and raised in Peru. She studied Naturopathic methods of healing, Jin Shin Jyutsu. Mercedes Cecilia has won several awards for her paintings, her Art in Education programs and community events.
