The biggest risk was selling all of my belongings & furniture, breaking my apartment lease and quitting my job to move to a new state (without a new job) where I knew no one at the age of 22.

I took a shop class, auto mechanics, when I was a teenage girl. I took it because it was an easy elective, not to break barriers, however. I want to win this because I think the title of the story is very clever.

I was raised in a conservative church environment, but the teachings I learned of how we should treat those in need led me to a life of social activism at a relatively early age. When I was about 18 I was protesting in front of the mayor’s office of a major city in support of support for food assistance for people with HIV, which was then called GRID (Gay-Related-Immuno-Deficiency). This was seen as a “radical” action for some, but felt very authentic to me and set me on a path that I am still following today.

I use my time and energy to assist previously under-represented communities understand their voting rights and make certain they have not been removed from the voter rolls; I help them re-register if that has happened. In my own way, I feel this is breaking barriers and setting out on my own path. Because I was not able to have children, this will be my legacy: the people who were able to use their voices to speak up in ways that had previously been denied to them.
